Caltrans Reopens Crestview Rest Area

MONO COUNTY — Caltrans reopened the Crestview Safety Roadside Rest Area on U.S. 395 today. The rest area, located between Mammoth Lakes and June Lake in Mono County, had been in a winter closure since December 16. Throughout April, maintenance crews made the necessary repairs to the rest area to facilitate its reopening.

Drivers should prepare themselves for changes at the facility. The Crestview Rest Area no longer has dumpsters or trash receptacles on the premises. This is due to the excessive amounts of dumping and household trash that has been left at the rest area over the past few years. With this change, drivers are encouraged to hold on to their trash until they reach an appropriate place to dispose of it. Leaving trash at the Crestview Rest Area is prohibited and Caltrans is placing signs to warn drivers of $1,000 fines for littering.

Incoming weather may affect the rest area and Mono County highways this weekend. State Route 89/Monitor Pass is in a storm closure until the weather event passes and the road can be assessed for reopening.

The remaining winter closures for Caltrans District 9 are still in effect. This includes:

·     State Route 108/Sonora Pass

·     State Route 270/Bodie Road

·     State Route 120 W to Yosemite

·     State Route 203 at Mammoth Mountain Lodge

·     State Route 168 W at Aspendell
