Saturday November 9, the Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine is opening its doors to the community. Free admission to the museum!
See rare vehicles, props, vehicles and costumes from 100 years of Hollywood History… from Hopalong Cassidy to Tony Stark – from GUNGA DIN and HIGH SIERRA to IRON MAN, TREMORS and DJANGO UNCHAINED! Your favorite movies; and your favorite stars, all filmed in and around Lone Pine’s Alabama Hills!

As an added bonus, we are opening the museum theater for a genuine Saturday Matinee featuring 4 classic westerns filmed in the Alabama Hills plus selected short subjects!

Here’s the schedule:
10:00AM –
HOPALONG RIDES AGAIN (1938) 65min. B&W William Boyd
On a cattle drive that good guy in a black hat Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd) encounters an eccentric science professor allegedly searching for an evolutionary missing link. But as Hoppy investigates further, the scientist turns out to be a ruthless cattle rustler armed with dynamite on a wild west crime wave.

11:05AM –
DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST (1943) 25min. B&W Allan Lane
Young and old kids alike flocked to theaters every week to see thrill-packed chapterplays with their favorite heroes and heroines. Every single action sequence and hair-raising stunt we’ve seen in the INDIANA JONES movies were done first in the serials, also called Cliffhangers, named for their breathtaking endings showing the hero headed for almost certain death. DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST is considered the most action-packed serial every made and we’re starting with Chapter One, “Valley of Death,” filmed on and around Movie Road in the Alabama Hills.

11:30AM –
KING OF THE PECOS (1936) 55min. B&W John Wayne
Big Duke Wayne began his career in a series of rousing action westerns, many of them filmed, like this one, in the Alabama Hills. In this one, law student Duke Wayne returns home to avenge the murder of his parents by local cattle baron Cy Kendall who claims a vast empire by right of discoveryβ€”and violence. When law books fail, Wayne turns to gun law to bring Kendall to justice. Although this was early in Wayne’s career, his towering screen presence dominates the film, photographed in some of the most beautiful locations in the Alabama Hills.

12:30PM –
DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST (1943) 15min. B&W Allan Lane
Chapter Two “Flaming Prison” with more spectacular action and thrills as we see how our heroes get out of the breath-taking cliffhanger ending from Chapter One. Listen closely to Allan Lane’s voice; 20 years later he would be the voice of the most famous TV horse, “MR. ED.”

12:45PM
RIDE LONESOME (1959) 73min. COLOR / WIDESCREEN Randolph Scott
Filmed entirely in the Alabama Hills, this tough, brutal, classic western counts such acclaimed filmmakers as Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese among its biggest fans. Gruff, steely-eyed bounty hunter Randolph Scott has to bring killer James Best (DUKES OF HAZZARD) to justice for a brutal murder. Hot on his trail is Best’s equally lethal brother Lee Van Cleef (THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY) and his gang of outlaws. The cast also includes James Coburn (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE GREAT ESCAPE) and Pernell Roberts (BONANZA).

2:00PM –
HELL BENT FOR LEATHER (1960) 82min. COLOR / WIDESCREEN Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy was an American soldier, actor, and songwriter. He was widely celebrated as the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II, and has been described as the most highly decorated enlisted soldier in U.S. history. He was no less heroic as the star of many classic western films of the 1950s and 1960s and this is one of his best. In the film, Murphy has his horse stolen by sadistic killer Jan Merlin who just murdered a family in cold blood in the nearby town of Sutterville. On his last legs, Murphy stops in the same town to buy a new horse and outfit when he’s mistaken by townspeople for the killer they’re searching for. He’s handed over to equally psychotic Marshal Stephen McNally, who decides to kill Murphy and pass him off as the real killer to enhance his reputation and collect the reward money. Murphy escapes and takes local woman Felicia Farr hostage until he can prove his innocence. This fast-paced thriller showcases beautiful color and widescreen views of the Alabama Hills and features quiet, baby-faced hero Audie Murphy in one of his greatest roles.
So come down Saturday November 9th to enjoy the Museum of Western Film History on our dime for a fun day with great free movies!
